Day 3: Basketball and beginning our trip

Today Ella had one more game for the Gym Rats Challenge with the 11th grade team. They lost so both teams ended 1-2 for the weekend, but there were a bunch of college coaches there so it is nice to get that exposure. Afterwards, we headed north to Syracuse, where we had Ella's half birthday dinner a couple days early--at the Golden Corral, of course. Her choice! Then we landed at Wellesley State Park right on the St. Lawrence River across from the Canadian border. It was late this afternoon when we got here so we explored the area a bit and the large campground, but will go to Thousand Islands National Park in Canada tomorrow. On the way, I finished my June book club book and found a Little Free Library at registration so I left it there for someone else to enjoy! Between yesterday and today, we have already seen a LOT of wildlife as we are driving. Someone joked that we should write it down, so I did. We even have many of the infamous BLACK squirrels here at our campground. It's a beautiful campground and we'd definitely visit again when we can stay longer and enjoy the water, but we will move along tomorrow for a big travel day.

Day 9: Craters of the Moon National Preserve

We left Montana today and drove through Idaho. We stopped at Craters of the Moon National Preserve on the way through. It’s so fascinating how our Earth has changed over millions of years. This area has changed a lot but had 7 active volcanoes that haven’t erupted for thousands of years but what remains is the black ash and rock. You’ll see all black around you and then bright green in the distance. This was a quick stop and then we drove on to Oregon where we’ll stay the night before heading to Washington tomorrow. We are now on Pacific time (3 hours difference from the East coast). Since we gained another hour, and it was time, we also took the car in for an oil change right by the campground. I finished my latest book and tried to drop it off here but there’s no place so hopefully I’ll find another Oregon book drop before we hit Washington!

Day 18: The final stretch!

Today is the last day of our 2.5 week adventure. We’re excited for the end but also sad it’s over (Jason and I, anyway). Since we got in late last night (after 2am!), we "slept in" until 7:30am and were on the road by 8am. We drove all day and had very few stops so we could get home by the original ETA of 9:30pm. Of course that time crept up anyway because of hauling the camper. In Wisconsin, we had wanted so badly to try some of their famous cheese. One of the quick gas station/bathroom stops had cheese wheels! So we got one for us and one for a gift. The rest of the day was driving and ending with back roads through Vermont and NH, so we got home at 12:15am. The kids were not happy because they have their first day of work at summer camp tomorrow morning, but they also slept much of the way in the car. We unloaded what we needed or really had to unload, and hit our own beds quickly! Yay for being home!

Day 5: Driving and 2 new states!

Today we woke up early and hit the road. We had a long driving day today and drove from 7am until 5pm. We left Indiana, went through parts of Illinois, and then entered Wisconsin (a state none of us have ever been to), and finished in Minnesota (another state none of us have ever visited). We “love” the Loves gas stations! They’re so clean and always have great gas, snacks, and bathrooms. We’re excited to have those again! I finished my next book today so I’ll be on the search for a Little Free Library to drop it off in. I was also looking back in our camping book and today is our 6 year anniversary of buying our Casita camper! Six years ago we drove down to Texas and picked up the camper we had ordered specifically for us! Our campground in Minnesota is only 15 minutes away from the Mall of America so we had to visit there! It is huge!
