Day 6: Theodore Roosevelt NP

We loved the campground that we stayed at in Minnesota last night. It was clean, beautiful, and quiet. I even saw a deer on the path to the bathroom this morning. We got up early to hit the road for North Dakota (another state we’ve never visited). We drove most of the day and we’re now in the Mountain time zone—2 hours earlier than the Eastern time zone. On the way, we celebrated Ella’s half birthday! She’s 16.5 years old now. She’s most excited about the fact that she has no more restrictions on her license. She got a couple small presents—one from us and one from Mimi and Pa. We also got her choice of a treat—Dairy Queen blizzards. It’s tough being a Christmas baby but celebrating her half birthday helps soothe it a bit.

When we got to Medora, we checked into the campground and went into Theodore Roosevelt National Park. We “took care of business” as they say in the Dear Bob and Sue series books, meaning we got our passport books stamped, bought a NP sticker and fridge magnet for the camper, bought a collector’s coin for Evan, and looked around the visitor’s center. Then we saw the Maltese Cross Cabin that Teddy Roosevelt stayed in when he visited from NY and drove along the scenic drive. It’s beautiful and is very similar to the Badlands, but greener. We saw tons of prairie dogs, some wild horses, two bison, and a coyote! Then we went to Peaceful Valley Ranch, which was a ranch in the 1800s, a dude ranch, park headquarters, and a horseback riding stable through the years. After, we came back to do laundry! The campground is right next to the NP so it has a beautiful backdrop.
